Scarlet literally has a broken heart. She's spent more time in a hospital bed than at home, and lives with the day-to-day reality that at any time, her heart could fail, and she will die. But Scarlet, who has been homeschooled, wants to do one thing before she dies: attend a real high school and experience the life of a normal teenager.

When her father and stepmother allow her to attend high school for one week, with her defibrillator, she isn't prepared for the bullying and social difficulties of school, especially when her own stepmother, the school's nurse, seems to be encouraging the bullying. But she also begins to make friends, and a health science class leads her to question her own illness, and the strange vitamins her stepmother forces her to take. As she begins to realize that things are not as they seem, Scarlet will have to find the courage to discover her stepmother's true intentions, and the secrets of her own illness in this suspenseful novel.
